If you ever get into a highway-related conversation with a Washingtonian, you'll probably hear about Washington State Route 99.  The route is rich in history, as it once was the main artery into and out of the state.  As Federal Route 99, north-south traffic once travel through small towns from just north of Portland, OR to a Canadian border crossing at Blaine, Washington State.  Today, much of Federal Route 99's routing has disappeared from existence, due to the implementation of Interstate 5.  However, some sections Interstate 5 which could not replaced are now known as Washington State Route 99.
