Bascom Avenue runs parallel to State Route 17 in southern San Jose. Before Interstate 880 was introduced to the San Francisco Bay Area during the 1980s, State Route 17 extended further north into San Rafael. After Interstate 880 was introduced, State Route 17's northern terminus was truncated at Interstate 280. From that point forward, everything north of Interstate 280 and south of Interstate 80 was thence known as Interstate 880. This sign on Bascom Avenue is just north of Interstate 280 in southern San Jose. So, the sign is inherently a historical artifact. There is no State Route 17 North at this latitude, but there is northbound Interstate 880.
