Federal Route 101 is one of the most prestigous highways on the West Coast. In California, a large portion of Federal Route 101 follows El Camino Real ("The King's Highway") -- a pathway used by Spanish missionaries in the 18th and 19th centuries. In the state of Washington, Federal Route 101 forms a perimeter around the Olympic Mountains, terminating in Olympia.
