Warning!  Socket 478 CPU-Beds are Fragile
By C. Rogers, 04.02

With introduction of the Intel 845-D chipset, many home enthusiasts have taken like to the newest generation of Pentium 4's.  However, there is one bit of caution that all new Pentium 4 owners need to know before building a new system-- this all lies with Pentium 4 heatsinks.

Pentium 4 heatsinks can weigh as much as 500 grams (1.1 lbs).  As compared to previous-generation heatsinks, the weight of the Pentium 4's counterparts are extremely heavier than anything seen in the past.  This is not necessarily a bad thing, however some things need to be taken into consideration when mounting the heatsink on top of an inserted microprocessor.

When placing a heatsink on top of a Pentium 4 CPU, the retention mechanism on the opposite-side of the CPU-bed must be secured first.

If the retention mechanism is secured on the adjacent side of the CPU-bed, the weight of the heatsink will crack the bed where the CPU-lever locks the processor.  This will cause the Pentium 4 processor  not be in correct alignment, and essentially make the motherboard useless.
