Palomino Core Retires at 1.73 GHz
By C. Rogers, 04.02

With the announcement of the AMD Athlon XP 2100+, the Palomino core has finally reached its limit in clock speed.  The new 2100+ CPU runs at a core-clock of 1.73 GHz, which sucks up 85 watts worth of power.  Naturally, any more speed boosts with the Palomino core would cause platform instability, as heat dissipation would become a major concern.

Within the next quarter, AMD will shrink the die of its Athlon XP chips to the 0.13 micron process.  In comparison to the present 0.18 micron process of the Palomino core, this new die-shrink will allow the Athlon XP to have smaller dimensions.  The smaller die will ensure there is less heat-dissipation per-capita, and allow future clock speed increases with ease.

The code-name of the next Athlon core will be "Thoroughbred".  AMD has been touting that its processor architecture is superior to Intel's, and clock speed is only one measure of performance.   However, the upcoming Thoroughbred core should allow the Athlon XP to works its way into the 2.0 GHz+ range, creating stiffer competition with rival Intel.

The OEM-retail price of the Athlon XP 2100+ is $246.
