Oregon State Route 53 was once a small constituent of Federal Route 101. As the Oregon Department
of Transportation rerouted the federal-highway snuggly along the Pacific Ocean,
the stretch between Wheeler and Necanicum Junction was orphaned. However,
the route was (and continues to be) a significant carrier of traffic en route to
Portland, so the state rebadged the thoroughfare as a state-highway.
