Pre-1960s, the American state of California
had a different highway-signage system. By today's standards, the
shield design for state and county shields may not be apparent at first
glance. The overall shape of the miner's shield is consistent, as well
the infamous California Grizzly who caresses the upper tip of the
shield. If you were driving slow enough, you may make out that a
California route was State-Administrated or County-administrated. This
photo was taken in Sacramento County along present-day State Route 160.
