LCD Monitors: Unattractive Until Better Resolution Support
By C. Rogers, 04.02

LCD monitors have come a long way in the past couple of years.  With its technology and consumer price-points improving as time goes forward, many PC users have been willing to make an extra investment in this emerging niche-market.

Aesthetically, LCD monitors are pleasing to the eye.  The slim design and small footprint appeal to many PC users' tastes.  Combine this with the fact 15" LCD monitors can be had for around $300, it is easy to understand why sales have picked up drastically.

Over time, sales projections for LCD monitors predict incredible growth within the next several years .  According to Future Electronics, LCD monitors will have 53% of the desktop monitor market by the year 2007.

While all this sound promising, LCD monitors have one major achilles-heel-- desktop resolution support.  Most LCD monitors will only put up good display quality at one resolution (typically 1024x768).  This can be an annoying and cumbersome task in some everyday situations.  For example, DVD playback using some graphics chipsets can only produce fluid video streams at 800x600 resolution.  While any LCD user can switch to 800x600, the Back to World Maps desktop will look distorted, and the image will not be clean.

For CAD/design professionals, higher resolutions are needed for some multimedia projects.  Some LCD monitors have problems displaying 1600x1200 resolution, or do not have the ability to properly scale this.

It's pretty much a given that LCD monitors will pick up in Sales.  However, in order for these types of displays to truly replace CRT (traditional) monitors, the proper scaling of multiple resolutions must be available.  However, at the rate of PC technology, this may fix itself in a few years time anyhow.
