Although Interstate 270 is a three-digit
Interstate, its relative importance to the American Interstate system gives it
the air of a two-digit Interstate. Reason is, traffic from westward
states generally comes from Interstate 70. A high-speed corridor is needed to Washington DC, the American
capital. Thing is, there is no two-digit Interstate connection between
Interstate 70 and Washington DC, so Interstate 270 was created to fill that gap.
