Before widespread Interstate-construction began in metro Los Angeles/San Bernardino, US 395 served as a major north-south corridor in San Bernardino and Riverside Counties.  As traffic levels rose and subsequent housing booms began in these counties, US 395 was decommissioned.  Eventually this stretch gained federal superhighway funding, and was named "Interstate 215".
