In the mid 1900s, CA-21 followed modern-day Interstate 680 between San Jose and the
northern shores of the Carquinez tollbridge, afterwards into Benicia and Vallejo
on what's known today as Interstate 780. In Mission San Jose (now incorporated into
Fremont), CA-21 formed a short duplex with CA-9. The duplex spanned a few
miles from Mission San Jose to Warm Springs (also incorporated into Fremont
today). For those interested, CA-9 once connected Santa Cruz with the
Oakland hils. That route has been dismantled in the San Francisco Bay
Area, and is now broken into several state routes, or pieces if you will: CA-13,
CA-236, CA-237, CA-238 and CA-262.
