North of Merced, Route 59 is not shield-posted whatsoever. The only hints of
its existence are through indications on mileage-markers (referred to as
"post miles" in California) and bridge-crossings. Most drivers
are unaware of these indications, and as a result, may easily get lost in
certain circumstances.
