Breakdown of RAM Standards
By C. Rogers, 04.02

Today, there are a slew of memory standards available.  Some standards exist only because they are dirt-cheap to produce.  However, other varations of RAM take advantage specific platforms, and massive amounts of bandwidth.  Without further ado, here is a breakdown of all RAM standards:

SDRAM

PC-1100 SDRAM
Specifications:  133 MHz bus, memory bandwidth of 1.06 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Athlon, Duron, Celeron, Pentium III, Pentium 4
Benefits:  Dirt-cheap to produce.  Allows PC prices to stay low.

PC-1600 DDR-SDRAM
Specifications:  double-pumped 100 MHz bus (200 MHz effective), memory bandwidth of 1.6 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Athlon, Athlon XP, Duron, Pentium 4
Benefits:  Entry-level DDR memory solution.  Slightly cheaper than PC-2100.

PC-2100 DDR-SDRAM
Specifications:  double-pumped 133 MHz bus (266 MHz effective), memory bandwidth of 2.1 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Athlon, Athlon XP, Duron, Pentium 4
Benefits:  Industry standard for Athlon-based platforms, making performance very competitive against the Pentium 4.

PC-2700 DDR-SDRAM
Specifications:  double-pumped 166 MHz bus (333 MHz effective), memory bandwidth of 2.7 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Athlon XP, Pentium 4
Benefits:  Will provide tomorrow's Athlon processors to have access to mammoth amounts of bandwidth.  (Today's Athlons processors cannot correctly utilize this much bandwidth).

RDRAM

PC-800 RDRAM
Specifications:  double-pumped 400 MHz bus (800 MHz effective), memory bandwidth of 1.6 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Pentium III, Pentium 4
Benefits:  When ran in dual-channel operation, the memory bandwidth of PC-800 matches the bandwidth of the Pentium 4 (3.2 GB/sec).

PC-1066 RDRAM
Specifications:  double-pumped 533 MHz bus (1.06 GHz effective), memory bandwidth of 4.2 GB/sec.
Platforms supported:  Pentium III, Pentium 4
Benefits:   Will compliment the next generation of Pentium 4 processors, and usher in a new performance standard for Intel-based PCs.
