AMD has ended the Palomino line of CPUs with the Athlon XP 2100+. The concern for future speed grades lies with heat dissipation, and the aging 0.18 micron process. Newer CPUs will use a die-shrink, as covered in this month's top article. The Duron line of processors will still use the 0.18 micron process, as the fastest processor is still clocked at a modest 1.3 GHz.
Since inception, the pending Hewlett Packard-Compaq merger has been marred with controversy. With CEO Carly Fiorina attempting to take HP in an entirely different direction with this merge, this has caused Walter Hewlett Jr. to take drastic actions. Speaking as a major figurehead for merger-opposition, many Hewlett supporters have been vocal about halting this multi-billion dollar acquisition. The fate of the HP-Compaq merge will not be known for several weeks (perhaps months), as tallying stock-holder votes will take a large amount of time. While Fiorina strongly believes the merger will approve (albeit by a small margin), Walter Hewlett Jr. thinks differently. Hewlett believes there is no major additions to HP's portfolio if this merge were to go through.
When will there be an universal DVD-recording standard? At this time, DVD-RAM and DVD-R standards are still battling DVD+RW for supremacy. Before drive media prices can become appealing the mass market, the DVD industry will need to get their act together, and make an important decision...
